The Next Generation of Cooling Refrigerants. Refrigerants are liquids stored in your air conditioner’s coils that cool and dehumidify indoor air. If there weren’t refrigerants, there wouldn’t be air conditioning. For years, the most common AC refrigerant was R-22 (Freon), but in 2012 the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) mandated the phase-out of R-22 through the Clean Air Act. By 2020, it will be illegal to produce R-22 as a result of its destructive impact to the environment. Introducing R-410A To decrease environmental impacts, all Lennox® products are now designed to work with the new R-410A AC refrigerant. R-410A is EPA-recognized and doesn’t contain chlorine, making it ozone-friendly. You can feel good about using this refrigerant in Liberty because it’ll help make your system operate efficiently, reliably and quietly, and provide the same cool comfort in the warmer months. Additional Considerations If your AC or heat pump was made prior to 2010, it may not be R-410A-compatible. You probably should think about upgrading your cooling system before R-22 is ultimately phased out. The old refrigerant will become rare in the next few years, costing you more to use your system effectively. The Lennox products we offer at Air Unlimited Heating & Cooling work with R-410A, so you can rest assured we have an AC or heat pump that better meets your needs. Be sure to refrain from using”alternate refrigerants that claim to work in R-22 systems. These include R-407C, R-438A and R-422, all of which can actually compromise your system’s performance.
